In 2008, Critical Mass launched the Creative Stimulus Project. The Creative Stimulus Projects are awarded to deserving St. Louis-area artists. Artists may use the funds to pursue special projects, experiment with new techniques, or deepen their understanding of their working processes. The Creative Stimulus Project is a unique opportunity for artists in St. Louis and has become an integral part of Critical Mass programming, building on our mission to create opportunities that attract and retain artists to study, work, and live in the St. Louis community. Each year, a guest curator is invited to curate the exhibition. All previous Creative Stimulus recipients are eligible for this honor, deepening the program’s opportunities for artists to advance their careers and build networks in St. Louis.
Each year, Critical Mass issues an open call to all artists living and working in the St. Louis area. A jury made up of local artists, curators and arts professionals reviews the artists’ submittals. The awards serve to highlight and recognize the artists’ work and their commitment to developing their own career.
